Over 25 years ago, several research projects were focused on finding non-surgical ways to address a condition that affects virtually all mankind -- BACK PAIN. Scientists found that once fractures, tumors or life threatening diseases of the spine are ruled out, what remains is a mechanical issue. Two basic observations were made by Dr. John Boren, pioneer and researcher in non-surgical spinal decompression. First was that as we age our muscles will naturally become weaker. Since the spine is only as strong as the muscles that support it, it follows logic that a strong spine/core is healthier than one that is weak. Therefore, if a person is not exercising, they are, in fact, getting progressively weaker. The second issue is gravity. People stand or sit two-thirds of their lives resulting in vertical compression on their spines. The TUL (time under load) increases with age. So, it is easy to visualize a spine weakening as the compression time increases. Compelling evidence suggested that disuse atrophy was a significant component in the development of mechanical spinal pathology.
